Can I Be a Telemental Health Client?

First of all, what is tele-mental health?

A therapist or counselor provides mental health services via video conferencing.

Question: What do I (the client) need?

1. Connection to the internet.

2. A camera. Most therapists prefer if clients have a steady camera, such as a built in on the computer or on a tripod. A camera on the phone works well too with most teletherapy web services. Just remember to keep yourself in focus of the camera.

3. An open mind. While research suggests that teletherapy can be just as effective as in person therapy, there are a few differences.

4. A safe, quiet space. Processing emotions is typically an act of vulnerability. Give yourself a space that allows you to be 100% vulnerable, genuine and open. This only serves you.

Question: Is it private?

Luckily, therapists have several options for telehealth platforms and apps that are HIPAA compliant. ALWAYS do your own searching to make sure you are comfortable with what is being offered to you. Your therapist should absolutely have an informed consent for you, specific to the telehealth you are being offered.

Question: How do I know if I’m an appropriate client for telehealth?

Your therapist should do an intake process with you. Some offer this via phone call, some in office, and others start the video chat right at the beginning. You and your therapist can decide together. However, after the first meeting, your therapist should make the professional judgement if you are a fit or not. Most high-functioning clients can be a fit for teletherapy. Remember, YOU have to be comfortable with the process!

Question: Does it cost more?

Many therapists charge the same in-office rate as teletherapy. Insurance companies are coming around and saying they will pay for online health services, too. This is huge! Be sure to check with your individual carrier prior to your first session if you plan to use insurance.

What other questions do you have about telemental health? As a therapist that is new to this concept, I’m constantly keeping up with the latest information. Especially in a time where this is a practice that is required to continue to offering my services.
