Self-care is essential to maintaining good mental and physical health. Taking care of yourself can help you feel more energized, reduce stress and anxiety, strengthen relationships with others and improve your overall well-being. For those local to St. Louis, there are plenty of ways to practice self-care and take a break from the daily hustle and bustle. Here are some tips for incorporating self-care into your routine:
1. Visit a Local Park: St. Louis is home to many beautiful parks; some of the big ones are Forest Park, Tower Grove Park, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. However, there are also many hidden gems in south county & west county that my children and I have found over the years. Find a comprehensive list of the St. Louis parks here. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood, so take a walk, have a picnic, or simply sit and enjoy the scenery. While you're at it, "ground" yourself by looking around to see how many different colors you see, what are the noises you hear, etc.
2. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day: There are many spas in St. Louis offering a variety of treatments, including massages, facials, and aromatherapy. Take some time to pamper yourself and relax. I will always endorse getting massages as they address so many aspects: relaxation, muscle-tension release, mood-boosting benefits, increase circulation, and even improve immunity. My favorite massage therapist in St. Louis, is Michelle Bloyd-Fink, schedule an appointment with her here.
3. Attend a Yoga or Meditation Class: Yoga and meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve flexibility and balance. There are many yoga and meditation studios in St. Louis, offering a range of classes and styles for all levels. During the mild seasons, find Yoga in the park options for an extra-mood boost experience in nature! St. Louis Magazine recommends these studios.
4. Try a New Restaurant: St. Louis has a diverse culinary scene, with many locally-owned restaurants and eateries. Trying a new restaurant or cuisine can be a fun way to indulge in self-care, and support local businesses. For a fun, social idea, suggest to a friend to try a new place a month. Giving yourself the opportunity of new experiences can broaden your perspectives, spark creativity and simply create new memories!
5. Visit a Museum or Art Gallery: Speaking of sparking creativity, St. Louis is home to many museums and galleries. The Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation are just to name a few. Take some time to explore the art and history of St. Louis, and learn something new.
6. Get Active: St. Louis has many opportunities for physical activity, including walking, hiking, and cycling trails, as well as sports leagues, recreation centers and fitness studios. Exercise has been shown to improve mood and boost energy levels, so find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.
7. Connect with Friends and Family: Social connections are important for mental health and well-being. Take some time to connect with loved ones, whether it's through a phone call, a visit, or a fun activity together. Haven't made many connections in St. Louis? Try Meet-Up-St. Louis for a shared experience with like-minded people. Meet-up-St. Louis to connect with other like-minded people.
8. Go See Your Favorite Sport: It wouldn't be a St. Louis post without the mention of our local sports teams. Whether you like baseball, soccer, or hockey, there is something for everyone. Beautiful Busch Stadium, home of the Cardinals, is my personal favorite!
Incorporating self-care into your routine is essential for good mental and physical health. By taking time for yourself and exploring all that St. Louis has to offer, you can feel more energized, relaxed, and connected to your community.
